What You Can Catch Off Sayulita, and What You Need

Sailfish run off this coast in every season, so there is no wrong month to fish here. What changes is everything else on the line.

We have 1 fishing charter on the map. Sayulita Surf Center is run by Diego Cadena, a surfer and fisherman born and raised in Sayulita. He runs sport fishing and spearfishing trips, inshore and offshore, and the day’s catch comes back as ceviche.

How we pick: this page shows every fishing charter on our map. The rules below come from the federal fisheries agency, CONAPESCA. For a boat day without the rods, see the boat tours guide. Everything else to do in town is in the Sayulita things to do guide.

What Bites in Which Months

Sailfish are the constant, caught in every quarter of the year. Marlin is the summer and autumn fish, from July through December. Roosterfish show up in the summer months.

Spring is for the bottom. Snapper and grouper are the April to June catch. Mahi-mahi, wahoo and yellowfin come and go through the year, so ask what has been biting that week before you pick a trip.

The Fishing Permit Every Angler on the Boat Needs

Anyone fishing from a boat in Mexico needs a sport fishing permit, and so does anyone spearfishing. Each angler holds their own. Casting from the beach needs none.

The permit comes from CONAPESCA, the federal fisheries agency, and its official page explains how to get one online, by the day, week, month or year. Ask the charter whether they arrange it for you before you book.

How Many Fish You Can Keep

The limits are in the federal sport fishing standard. Each angler keeps up to ten fish a day, no more than five of one species. Billfish, meaning marlin, sailfish and swordfish, count one a day.

Dorado and roosterfish are two a day each. Past those limits you can keep fishing, as long as every fish goes back alive.
