Where to Shop in Sayulita, Street by Street

Walk down Avenida Revolución and you pass The Laughing Jaguar, a turquoise storefront full of alebrijes, Oaxacan woodcarvings and Huichol art, open until 10pm every day. It has been gathering work from across Mexico since 2010. Start there.

We’ve got 28 shops on the map, and most of them sit on three streets: Revolución, Calle Marlín and Calle Miramar. You can walk them in an afternoon. Boutiques sell handmade swimwear and clothes designed in town, the galleries carry folk art, and the corner stores stock whatever the villa ran out of.

On Fridays from November through May, the farmers market takes over Calle Revolución with around eighty vendors, and everything on the tables, from coffee and cheese to flowers and handmade jewelry, is grown or made by the person selling it. Bring pesos in small bills for the stalls. When your bags are full, the rest of the town is a short walk away.

Mexican Craft, Huichol Art and Ceramics

Revolución is where the folk art is. At number 56, Project Artefakto sells handwoven textiles, hand-painted pottery and carved figures from across Mexico, in an air-conditioned room that earns its keep at two in the afternoon. Buying for a shop back home? Ask about wholesale.

For something you’ll use every day, walk up to Calle Miramar. Kelido stocks small runs of ceramics, vases and mugs by local craftspeople, open daily from 9am to 5pm, and it ships across Mexico and to the US. In season, the Thursday art walk opens galleries and studios in the evening, so check its dates before you plan around it.

Swimwear, Dresses and Leather

Buy the swimsuit here. Crochet Amor, inside Hotel Hafa on Revolución, crochets every bikini and dress by hand, so the colors are one of a kind, and it’s open daily until 9pm. Belle Curves sews up-cycled, reversible suits in UV50 fabric, sized S through 4X, behind a teal storefront.

Calle Marlín is the other street to walk. Manyana, at number 18, designs its own clothes in the shop and has them hand-sewn from Mexican cotton in a workshop nearby. At number 11, Karola-Lola hangs dresses, hats and leather bags in the doorway, and the cowboy boots are inside.

Stocking the Villa: Fruit, Tortillas and Water

Renting a kitchen? Revolución 63 covers two errands at once. Frutería Carolina stacks mangoes, pineapples and tomatoes in open crates every day from 7am to 9pm, and Tortillería Calamar, under the squid mural at the same number, sells handmade corn tortillas and masa by the kilo.

For the pantry, wine and beer, Don Rodolfo at Revolución 29 is open every day from 7am to 10pm. Buy drinking water by the garrafón, the big refillable jug: Depósito El Aguaje on Calle Valadão swaps and fills them, and delivers. Call ahead.

Bottles and Gifts to Carry Home

For a bottle to take home, Sayulita Wines & Co., a block from the beach on Calle Miramar, stocks raicilla beside Mexican wines, mezcal and tequila, and pours tastings on Wednesday and Saturday from 6 to 9pm. Real Tequila sells only additive-free, 100% blue agave tequila, online, and delivers in Sayulita, San Pancho and Bucerías.

Want a shirt nobody at home owns? The Chingón street kiosk sells limited-run surf, skate and punk tees made in town, and it takes pesos, dollars and cards. Need it wrapped? La Hormiguita, the stationery shop in the center, has ribbon, bows and gift bags. It closes on Sundays.
